It seems that Christopher Columbus thought too much of himself.
He led for depriving native Americans of a respectful and valid ethnonym.
Redskin/Red Indian:
Some Europeans have called NATIVE AMERICANs or "RedSKINs" or, more commonly, "Red Indians".
This is in part based upon the color metaphor for RACE which colonists and settlers historically used in North America and Europe, and also to distinguish Native Americans from the Indian people of India.
