The amphibians, Porifera, reptiles and mammals are called so because of the following reasons:

  • Amphibians: It is a Greek word in which Amphi means both and bio means life. The species belonging to this category has the ability to survive on both land as well as water. Thus they are called as amphibians.
  • Porifera: It a Latin word in which poros means pore and ferre means to bear. This phylum includes pore bearing animals commonly called as sponges. Thus they are called as porifera.
  • Reptiles: The word reptila is of Latin origin, in which Repere or reptum means to creep or crawl. All animals belonging to this class has the ability to creep or crawl. Thus they are called as reptiles.
