The primary reason of Animal rights activists objecting to production of silk is the usual method thread is obtained from the cocoon . Its boiled and in the process pupae are killed.
There is another method silk producers have found that they wait till the pupae are out of the cocoon. Usually Eri silk in Assam is produced this way and hence its also called “Ahimsa” silk.
Can artificial threads replace silk…. No way…!! Its the same difference as gold plated and pure gold jewellery. No comparison at all.
I don't really want to dwell on if the Animal rights people are making right noise, but if they had their way, every poultry farm would be shut down. Yes, the silk worms are farmed and there is a word for it… “sericulture”. Not only it helps in the silk producers, it creates livelihood for a lot of families associated with it.
So, indulge in Silk…. Be lost in its class…even if you tend to listen to the Animal rights activists…let that be your guilty pleasure.
