Antibiotics are not indicated in an uncomplicated dengue infection. However in patients with superimposed bacterial infection, use of an antibiotic is recommended. Dengue infection can cause significant leukopenia that theoratically can increase the risk of bacterial infection especially in hospitalized patients. However scientific data rationalizing the prophylactic use of antibiotics in this setting is lacking.
