The melancholy of Antonio serves as the beginning of the play. Antonio's sadness indicates that something bad is going to happen. It seems that Antonio foresees the danger to his ships.
His melancholy gives the readers and the audience an idea that some tragic event will take place further in the play.

as you go through the first scene of act 1 you will observe that Antonio is starting the dialogues which are quite a type of sorrow as if he is going through some sort of problems but this melancholic character of Antonio is because of bassanio getting married. he thinks that after marriage bassanio will not maintain the original friendship that he used to do earlier
