Viruses insert their genetic material into a human cell's DNA in order to reproduce. Antibiotics cannot kill viruses because bacteria and viruses have different mechanisms and machinery to survive and replicate. The antibiotic has no “target” to attack in a virus.

Antibiotics are useless against viral disease because viruses are simpler organisms that use the substances from the host organisms to perform their functions Therefore antiviral drugs are effective for viral diseases.

In the case of bacteria, the antibiotics interfere with the cell wall and prevent it from multiplying.
