Why are atoms referred to as the building blocks of matter?

hey ,
because molecules and crystals are built with atom .
most of the properties of matter that we experience every day can be explained by knowing which atoms is a particular peice of matter made of and how atoms are arranged .
suppose , if we didn't live where we do , for example in the sun; we'd say that the blocks of matter would be protons neutrons and electrons becoz all the proceses that happen in the sun are of nuclear nature and the chemical reactions are too weak to happen .

it all depends on how much energy is available.
