Schoolchildren are teaching alphabets to their unlettered mothers in a path-breaking program to boost female literacy in one of the most backward regions of India.

The extraordinary exercise underway in the newly created district of Sangareddy in Telangana State is the brainchild of Manicka Raj Kannan, a feisty 2005-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who is posted as Collector in the remote area.

An estimated 45,000 school boys and girls studying in classes seven to ten have spent the last few months, especially the summer holiday, teaching their illiterate mothers and grandmothers how to read and write the letters of the Telugu language in the privacy of their homes.

Spoken by around 75 million south Indians, Telugu is the official language of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states.
