Coal and petroleum are called non renewable resources because they cannot be formed quickly.They take a lot of time to form.They take even millions and billions of year to be formed.So coal cannot be replenished within a given time.Therefore it is considered to be non renewable resources.

Because coal and petroleum are present in less amount and they get depleated as we go on using them so they are called non renewable source of energy.
