Calyx is the outermost floral whorl consisting of green leaf-like structures, the sepals, which protect the delicate inner parts of the flower while it is developing and prevent it from desiccating. The main function of the calyx is to protect the flower in its bud condition.therefore, calyx is called as accessory whorl.

The petals of flowers are often arranged in a circle around the center of the flower, and this collective unit of petals is called as the corolla. The petals of the corolla are designed to aid in pollination. The color and texture of the petals of the corolla also play an important role in pollination.Hence, corolla is called as an accessory whorl.
