It is used in rotation with crops because once we plant any crop the crop loses all its fertility making it nutrientless

When we plant leguminous plants there are several nitrogen fixing bacterias (rhizobium) in its root nodes this helps in restoring the soils fertility thus making it nutritious and fertile
