why are dams over rivers made broader at bottom than at top

As we go deeper in the water the force and pressure increases and if the dams will not be broader at the bottom then the dam will be destroy or crack due to heavy force and pressure. That's why the dams over rivers made broader at the bottom than at the top.

as we reach deeper and deeper into the sea the pressure on the walls of the dam increases hence the walls are made more broader oat bottom to bear more pressure
