Discoveries usually come up as either an unexpected side-effect while “doing something else” or “looking for something else” etc. OR they come up through rigorous searching, assumptions and even more refined search. e.g. discovery of microwaves vs. discovery of distant stars

Inventions on the other hand may lead to discoveries (think microscopes or telescopes) and are usually built on several discoveries (discovering light properties and glass).

In short, we use discoveries to invent and our inventions could lead us to more discoveries; in turn, improving or making more inventions.

Inventions in a pinch are made to solve problems. Discoveries in a pinch could help solve problems but are usually very necessary for inventions.
