Farmers need a lot of friends I guess and though I’ve never heard the phrase of earthworms being the friend of farmers, it makes total sense to me. Now, I can explain why.

Frequently, farmers are thought of as tending the soil. Their jobs being to produce food for us and be sure the environment will be able to sustain future generations. That means precious resources like soil and water need to be carefully tended.

Earthworms assist in the care and longevity of the health of a large number of soils. To be more specific about what it is they do, earthworms can help aerate soil — just think about it… how hard can your soil be if they are squiggling around in there? That helps rain water and nutrients get soaked in to the area where the plant roots are. This aeration is especially good when crops are farmed with no-till or other conservation practices or teamed with cover crops or crops that have different types of root systems.

Another thing that worms do to help the soil is to help break down organic matter — the parts of plants (like leaves, stems, grass, etc) that are left in the field. That helps build the fertility of the soil. In fact, it is so useful that worm castings can be spread on soil to help build it (for instance, it is harder for sandy soils to build and retain organic matter). Those castings (I just call that worm dirt) can be so useful for houseplants, etc,

Earthworm loosen the soil by burrowing deep into it .This is equal to tilling of the soil .
Earthworm consume animal and plant wastes and release organic matter as it excreta.this excreta of earthworm increases soil fertility it improves water holding capacity of soil.the process of using worms to decompose animal and plant waste is called vermicomposting. the manure produced after decomposing of wastes is called vermicompost.
