The closed glass chamber of the bulbcontains, an inactive (inert) gas,Argon. The glass chamber can't befilled with air as the presence of oxygen will cause the filament to burn, i.e. react with oxygen. ... An obviously, inert gas won't react with the filament.Nitrogen is also used like argon

Your choices are an inert gas like nitrogenor argon that won't react with the hot filament, or a vacuum. Any oxygen would react quickly with the tungsten causing a burnout. The inert gas (nitrogen) reduces the evaporation of the tungsten as the gas molecules make it harder for the tungsten to leave the filament.
