By the term biodiversity hotspot , we mean an area of land which has a rich biodiversity, i.e. has a huge variety of plants(flora) and animals(fauna).

Since forests are known to have diverse species of flora and fauna, they are called

biodiversity hotspots.

Four approaches for conserving forests are:

1. Reducing deforestation and encouraging afforestation.

2. Controlling forest fires to protect the forests.

3. Proper utilisation of forests and its produce.

4. Government interference by implementation of proper rules and regulations associated with conservation of ths rich biodiversity of forests.

Biodiversity hotspot:

The biogeographic region which is threatened by the human habitation is called biodiversity hotspot.

A biodiversity hotspot has 1,500 species of vascular plants and 70% of its primary vegetation has been destroyed.

Forests as biodiversity hotspot:

The forest undergoes deforestation for human needs such as agriculture, woods and other purposes. The animals in the forest are killed by poachers.

When trees and animals are killed, the rare plants and insects are killed naturally which gets extinct.

Steps for conservation of forests:

  1. Controlled deforestation.
  2. Protection against forest fires.
  3. Afforestation.
  4. Better farming practices.
