Forests Are Unevenly Distributed In India Because

  • In India, forest cover is relatively good in the states such as Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Sikkim, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli where more than one-fourth of the geographical region is covered as forests.

  • Rajasthan and Gujarat obtain scanty rainfall and occurrence arid and semi-arid climates which is why extensive vegetation cover is not foreseen under such conditions.

  • The union territories such as Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Delhi and Pondicherry are poor states so they are unable to conserve forests.

  • Jammu and Kashmir have a low percentage of forest area which is largely due to poor rainfall, steep barren slopes and snow-covered peaks.
