the free bird is referred to as a free man who live his life happily and the caged but is referred to as a man who is a slave and living his miserable life.
At this point Maya Angelou is trying to express the miserable condition of the African-American people by comparing the free bird to the caged bird as a symbol for their fight for freedom. It also symbolises the struggle of being a black person whose words are not heard and of one who longs for freedom.
