why are hammers with long handle preferred ?

A hammer with long handle helps to use it with greater ease than the one with short handle. it is because the turning effect of the force is different in these two cases. the moment produced by a force using a hammer with long handle is greater than the torque produced by the same force using a hammer of short handle.

                                torque=force * moment arm

Torque = Force x Perpendicular distance.

If we keep the force as constant, then Torque is directly proportional to the Perpendicular distance;

i.e., Torque α Perpendicular distance.

So, if the distance is less, less Torque will be produced; whereas if the distance is more, more Torque will be produced.

Hence, hammers with longer handle are preferred.
