Landfills are when the waste or the garbage is being collected in a flat land possibly a barren one and covered with earth for it to decompose. It is actually a very effective method of getting rid of waste. Large cities mean more population. More people mean more waste is produced and it needs to be collected and disposed. Landfills fulfill this activity quite efficiently and this is why landfills come up fast near large cities.

Large cities have industries and factories.
These industries and factories produce heaps of wastes i.e. generate a lot of waste.
These wastes are collected....but where to collect......??
So people gather or throw all such wastes in the form of landfills.
Usually the landfills are seen in the outskirts of a city
