What is the sawdust ?

Sawdust / wood dust is the small pieces of wood that makes by the waste products produced in wood-working processes/operations.

Why is it used to put over ice ?

if we go deep into sawdust materials , we can see the the large spaces inside the sawdust's 1 compound , inside which air is trapped and so it helps to prevent the connecting link between the ice and outer air.

Sawdust is used for the purpose of preventing ice from melting by maintaining it's ( ice's ) temperature from the outer environment as it is a good insulator for the ice and effect the connection of ice's temperature from outer temperature.
