Saw dust is a good and inexpensive insulator. Good for storing ice. The sawdust acts as insulation, isolating the ice from warm air so the ice doesn't melt.

❤️Here's your answer:-
⏺️Sawdust had a traditional use for storing vegetables.
⏺️Sawdust is a good insulator but more important, it is an absorbent desiccant. It is also cheaper. Once ice starts to have surface water, it rapidly deteriorates as an “effective source of cold”. Sawdust can also absorb shock and a very small layer prevents ice from fusing together.
It is important to keep ice “dry” if it is going to be used for cooling.
