The leaves of cactus plant are modified into spine because it helps them to lose less water during transpiration and also protect from beings eaten by animal.

as the leaf also acts as the surface of transportation..... i.e. the loss of water molecules....
and in desert the plants don't get enough water....
so in order to conserve water the leaves are converted into spine.....
but spines also helps them in protection from other animals which come in search of food or water......
