Why are lines of longitudes also called prime meridian?

It is because each longitude divides the globe(earth) into Two equal halves i.e. westernmost and easternmost part if you consider earth as a flat surface( for better understanding). Prime meridian is a vertical line which divides the particular region having definite extensions into 2 equal parts and hence is chosen as the standard meridian of that area(country).
