Why are metal oxide call basic oxides and non metal oxide called acidic oxide?

Because the oxides form by metals are basic in nature for example :zinc oxide , calcium oxide etc... and oxides form by non metals are acidic in nature for example : sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide
