because metals always give electrons and non metals usually gain electrons thats why they are called electro -ve and +ve

hii, friend
metals have (1,2,3) electrons in their outermost shell so during a chemical reaction they usually donate their electron
therefore they form electropositive ion.
while non-metals have (4,5,6,7) no. of electrons in their outermost shell so they attract or receive electrons from other elements to get stability and therefore they form electronegative ions
Glad to help you
hope it helps
thank you.
