why are most of the settlements in the prairie region scattered

The population in the praires is very less and people inherited large amounts of lands from their ancestors or predecessors, and so the praires has become a scattered settlement. But now, people are flocking the praires also and surveys show that the praires may be averagely populated by 2020 with about 50 people per square kilometer.
