1) Multi-purpose projects require a large area to be set-up.
2) They produce problems in the natural water flow.
3)When water is released under great pressure it floods the entire area.
4)The collected water in dams solidifies the soil and increases the water level.
5) This solidified soil decreases the soil fertility.

"Adverse effect on soil fertility":

Due to dam constructions, annual floods have been less. And that's why the downstream region's soil doesn't get nutrient-rich "silt." This reduces the soil's fertility.

"Adverse impact on aquatic life":

The aquatic life in the downstream area does not get enough nutrient material due to the dam constructions on the rivers. River regulation and damming disturb the natural water flow affecting poor sediment flow down and a large amount of sedimentation at the reservoir's bottom resulting in rocky stream beds and poor aquatic habitats of the rivers.

"Local communities Displacement":

large dams result in local communities being displaced. Local people often vacate their land and assets as well as their meager access and resource control for the nation's food.

"Cropping pattern changes":

It is the responsibility of multipurpose projects to provide farmers with their means of irrigation. Because of this, most farmers have shifted their crop pattern to water - intensive and commercial crops. This has resulted in soil salinization leading to environmental imbalance."
