why are nails made very narrow at one end and somewhat broad at the other

because more narrow so force exerted less and threshold exerted more pressure

More the surface area less is the pressure and vice versa. Nail is narrow at one end so that we can easily pierce it into the board with less pressure.The other end is broader so that we don't get hurt while trying to insert the nail into an object.
