The North East India is commonly described as "Land of Seven Sisters" because of their interdependence on each other. All the seven states are isolated from India and only way to reach there is via Siliguri Corridor (also called Chicken's Neck) in Assam. Due to this interdependence, they were given sobriquet "The Land of Seven Sisters" by Jyoti Prasad Saikia (A civil servant from Assam).

The Eastern States are called as seven sisters because of the similarity between the states in terms of geographical features and independent among them in political, social and economic spheres.
