why are northern plains called depositional plains

Northern plains have been formed by the regular deposition of three rivers and their respective tributaries i.e. Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. Their depositions resulted in huge alluvium reserves in the soil since long back which thus formed now the fertile Northern plains.
