Why are pentahalides of phosphorus are more covalent than trihalides?

Because phosphorus has vacant d orbital. Hence its s orbitals electrons get excited and makes the p orbirals electrons also excited. Making a valency of 5, hence it forms 5 sigma bond ( covalent bond)).
