Why are proteins called polypeptides?

This is because when  two amino acids bond together, they form a dipeptide, and when several amino acids bond they form polypeptides, which constitute a protein.

Proteins are called as polypeptides because they consist of large number of α-amino acids that are linked together into a long chain by means of peptide linkages.

A polypeptide with more than hundred ά-amino acid residues having molecular weight greater than 10,000 is called a protein.
