Rayon, also known as viscose, is regenerated fibre to distinguish it from cotton which is naturally grown fibre. Rayon and cotton are both cellulose but while cotton fibre comes directly from the cotton plant, rayon's origin are trees but not directly. The trees are chemically processed to remove all stuff save cellulose (meaning stuff like the tree bark and other parts). (Most rayon comes from bamboo but do not confuse rayon fibre with bamboo fibre). The cellulose extracted from the trees is mixed with sodium hydroxide and other chemicals to extrude what we know as the rayon fibre. The cotton boll is also processed to get the fibre but it is a physical process to turn the lint into fibre. One can imagine cotton fibre looking at the boll on a cotton plant but the rayon yarn is the outcome of a engineered process and has no resemblance to the original tree from which cellulose was extracted. Other varieties of rayon such as lyocell and modal also follow same process. Modal is made exclusively from beechwood trees which gives it some special properties.
