Fossil fuels, which have powered much of modern man’s development so far, take thousands of times as long to produce as they do to consume.

Even wood burning and similar processes are barely sustainable, as the human population’s growth is rapidly outstripping the rate at which such fuels can be replaced once consumed - to say nothing of any polluting effects.

Furthermore, as the use of non-renewable energy has had such a drastic effect on the world’s climate, we are more and more dependent on energy (such as electricity) for our daily lives. Just imagine how life would be even now, without easy access to heating in cold weather or cooling in hot weather. As the climate becomes more extreme around the globe, these needs will only increase.

As potable water becomes more scarce, how will we cope without the ability to purify water and transport it from more remote locations?

If we can’t make a rapid move to using renewable energy sources for the vast majority of our activities, we will simply run out of energy, and life as we know it will become unsustainable.
