soaps are not suitable for washing clothes when water is hard: Soaps, when used with hard water, does not lather or produce foam easily because of the formation of a curdy precipitate or scum. This scum is created when soaps react with the calcium and magnesium ions present in hard water.

yashikagariya: how is this problem resolved by adding detergent???
sarazeb8989: Detergents are less sensitive to the hardness minerals in water; therefore, they perform better and do not form a curd. Because of these features, detergents, instead of soaps, are used for laundry products.

Hey dear,

● Explaination -
- Hard water contains salts of calcium and magnesium principally as bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulfates.
- These ions displace sodium ion from soap molecules to form insoluble soaps.

Ca2+ + 2Na(stearate)↓ → Ca(stearate)2 + 2Na+
Mg2+ + 2Na(stearate)↓ → Mg(stearate)2 + 2Na+

- Formation of these insoluble soaps thus decreases the cleansing capacity of soaps.
- Therefore, soaps are not very effective when a fabric is washed in hard water.

Hope this helps you.
