Some substances are biodegradable because they can be easily broken up into simpler compounds with the help of enzymes released by microorganisms...

Whereas the non - biodegradable such as plastic have long strong bond chains which could take 1000s of years to be broken down by the microorganisms....

That is why plastics are becoming a great threat to the environment as it is causing harm in various ways...
