Hi friend,

The waves that need a medium to propagate are called mechanical wave. There are two types of mechanical waves: Transverse waves and Longitudinal waves.

Transverse waves are those in which the particle oscillates perpendicularly to the direction of propagation of the wave. Example: A vibrating string.

Longitudinal waves are those in which the particle of the medium oscillates parallel to the direction of the propagation of wave. Example: Sound wave.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU:-))

sound waves are called mechanical waves because they have mechanical energy.
Let's prove with an activity.

Apparatus: 1 beaker ,2 cell phones, sand, one bursted balloon.

Procedure: 1. Take 1 cell phone and keep it in the beaker.
2. Now tie the mouth of beaker with bursted balloon and keep the sand particles on balloon
3. Take the 2nd cell phone and call to the 1st cell phone.

Observation: we can observe that the sand particles move when the cell phone ringtone comes out.

With the help of this activity we can prove that sound waves has mechanical energy.
