Sound waves are not always invisible. Sound is simply the ordered vibration of matter (as opposed to heat, which is the disordered vibration of matter).

As the energy of the sound is transferred to more and more molecules of air, they vibrate less and less until the effect is lost in the constant random jostle of air molecules. The sound is gone.
