The Eastern Ghats are lower in altitude than the western ghats. ... This makes the monsoon rains lose its moisture on the western slopes of the Western Ghats and the rest of the plateau and the eastern ghats gets scanty rainfall. Because of this Tamil Nadu (Chennai) gets less rain fall during South West Monsson.

(i) Bay of Bengal branch of South-West monsoon passes parallel to Chennai coast.

(ii) Due to the presence of Western Ghats on its way of flow, Arabian sea branch of South-West monsoon could not cross over and give little or no rain in Chennai.
