Western Ghats are like a mountain wall parallel to the thin west coast of Indian Peninsula. The Eastern Ghats are very less in altitude than the Western Ghats. This makes the places lying in the Eastern Ghats fall in the rain shadow area and leaves the whole broad land of Tamil Nadu to the east of the Western Ghats. During the South-West monsoon, the full fury is unleashed from the Arabian Sea on Western Ghats and Kerala, which get heavy rains leaving Tamil Nadu on the other side in the rain shadow area. Chennai also being in the rain shadow area suffers the same situation and gets scanty rain fall. Thus, the South-West monsoon are less rainy in Chennai.

South-west monsoons are less rainy in Chennai because:
- Chennai falls in the rain shadow region of Eastern Ghats (i.e., at Coromandel Coast).
- Due to this, it receives scanty rain as compared to the South West monsoon winds of the Konkan Coast on the Western Ghats.
- South West monsoons blow from June month to September month. These blow from Sea to Land.
- These blow in two branches: Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea Branch, and give a bulk of rain fall to India from 75 percent to 90 percent.
