Because southern region recieve monsoon rainfall which facilitate growth of thick vegetation whereas, Northern slopes face strong cold winds which make northern region barren.

The growth of vegetation depends upon the amount of sunlight and rainfall received. The southern slopes of the Himalayas receive more rain due to the southwest monsoon winds which travel west along the southern slops. The northern slopes do not receive such rainfall. So the southern slopes are covered with thick vegetation as compared to the northern slopes.
