Topographic maps show the shape of Earth's surface by using contour lines, the lines on the map that join points of equal elevation ,Apart from showing just contour lines, topographic maps also use a lot of map symbols to represent it's features .Features are represented by using point, line and area symbols

symbols are widely accepted signs or sign systems which signify an idea or concept. They represent different features on a map and are not drawn to scale.

They are important because:

1.It is impossible to label every single feature in words on a map, therefore we use map symbols.

2.It is easy and more clear to use a map which has symbols.

3.Symbols can be used to depict features like cities, roads and railways.

4. A map is a useless tool without symbols.

5.Symbols convey the information provided by the map.

6. Most map symbols are conventional signs as they are understood by everyone around the world.
