Why are the chemical formulae of sulphur dioxide and magnesium oxide different?

Above the activation temperature for the combustion, the magnesium dissociates the SO₂ and combines with the oxygen to make MgO. You won’t get uncombined sulfur as a result, though, because the magnesium will burn in it too, yielding MgS.
