The bridge expands and contracts as the temperatures change up an down. If the deck was not fitted with expansion joints they would buckle is Summer heat. The Sydney Harbour Bridge arch at the apex was designed to be fitted together when the temperature was at a specific low. When the temperature dropped they were able to fit the two abutting faces with bolts and they have remained there ever since allowing the arch to expand and contract which is acceptable. In former times the heat opf summer warped railway lines and workers had to go along hitting out the chocks so that the lines would not serpertine.
