Why are the long jump athelets made to jump in sand pits?

To reduce injuries … Sand surface has more grip… Thus friction is high … So the athlete falls with more time reducing momentum ( according to Newton's 3rd law of motion) …

because the friction if there is no sand then the proabilitiy of slipping
