Pulses have a type of bacteria in their nodules known as Rhizobium. They trap nitrogen and make them water soluble nitrates. These nitrates are left in the soil. The pulses use some of them, but not fully. In this way nitrogen is replenished in the soil without fertilizers.
This saves a lot of money.
