why are the trees growing together taller than those which are growing on their own

In short, because the collection of trees is competing for sunlight, each individual will be taller in a grove than if it was standing isolated in a clearing. Another factor is that a tree standing in isolation is fully exposed to the wind; such buffeting will result in a trunk with more curves, greater girth and less height than an identical tree that was protected from the winds.
