why are the upper layer of water in a pond warmer

Cold water is heavier thus it snkins to the bottom and as warm water is lighter it floats upwards thus the upper layer of pond is warmer than the layer beneath it. The upper layer is also continually being warmed by the sunlight thus it remains warm
