Why are the walls of a dam thickened near the base ?

In a liquid, the pressure due to the liquid in bottom is very high as compared to the top, so, as to strengthen the dam it's walls are thickened.

The pressure of water at the bottom of the dam is maximum. So, to withstand against this pressure the base of the dams are thickened.
